And it wasn't as bad as I had expected. I've been to the Mall (notice the capital letter. I'm not talking a place to shop) for the Fourth of July fireworks before. So, I was expecting a ridiculous amount of people. I was expecting pushing. I was expecting impatience (especially given the 20 degree temps!). I was expecting, in short, the worst.

Instead, people were unbelievably civil. There was no pushing even when we were being herded like cattle down 18th Street. No yelling. And, despite almost no visible security on the Mall (I'm sure there was some there, but I didn't see anything other than snipers on the roof of a museum), nothing bad happened. Being a DC-area resident, while you aren't expecting a terrorist attack every.single.day, you are acutely aware of your surroundings and know, for a fact, that there are hateful people out there that are very willing to do stupid shit.

We ended up on the north side of the Washington Monument. We weren't far from the Jumbotron showing the ceremony & had a view of the front of the White House. Not too shabby.

Today I witnessed history. And braving cold & crowds was unquestionably worth it.

My memory is weird. I'll forget where I've put my keys just moments after I've set them down but, at almost the same instant, I will have a very vivid memory of the past come rushing back into my mind. Today, that "memory" was of a weekend when we went to Meadowlark. In August.

May they keep you warm on this cold January evening and remind you of how beautiful summer really is. And they totally prove I'm a forgetful procrastinator!

I confess, I got a bit "arty" with the photoshop with these pictures from the Everglades. So, yes, that noise is indeed fake.

I'm not a huge fan of over-processing of photos, as many of you know, but sometimes everyone is a hypocrite.

These spores both fancinate me & creep me out. Since I'm planning on growing most, if not all, our vegetables from seeds this year expect many a photo of a plant in 2009.

I've been lazy (big surprise, right?) and haven't gotten around to uploading photos like I should. Shame on me! Well, ladiez & gents, hold on to you hats b/c you're going to get 3 posts in ONE night! Try to contain yourself.

This is from 3 weeks ago when the hubz & I went to the National Arboretum. I believe it was "peak color" for the DC area. This year we had nice color since the weather was consistant. Last year, everything just turned brown & fell off. blech.

This plant facinated me. We got there in the morning, shortly after they opened, so many things were still covered in dew. With the dew and the sun, this little guy looked like it had been Bedazzled.

Yesterday we indulged in a lovely fall day: hiking, picnic'ing AND apple picking.

Of course we got "lost" hiking. We suck at sticking to our intended trail; we always seem to veer off to another one! It was still a beautiful day and Shenandoah National Park is lovely. Since it's not quite peak, there weren't many fellow hikers. The scenery made me fall in love all over again with my wide angle lens (shout out to Tokina 11-16mm).

I am now in search of Washington Irving's Tales from the Alhambra. It's a stunning place, both the palace and generalife gardens are just majestic. You can't help imaging a different time and royal intrigues, romances, and events that have taken place there, despite the throngs of tourists.

Sadly, when we went the lion fountain was under constuction, but the article gives you photos. My photos totally don't do the place justice. The Alhambra is a place you really need to experience for yourself!

We went to Spain for our anniversary: Madrid, Seville, & Granada. Seville was our favorite, hands down and I therefore highly recommend everyone to visit. The city is a beautiful mix of Islamic and Baroque-looking (to me) architecture, delicious tapas, tinto de verano (red wine with sprite...just as refreshing as sangria, but cheaper!) and so many things to see and do. I actually didn't find, despite the exchange rate, Spainish food or sightseeing to be radically different than the States. You could get a beer for less than $3, a serrano ham & manchego cheese sandwich on baguette for $4.50-$5, and a meal of tapas for about $15-$20pp (which is about what we would pay at Jaleo)

Cathedral

I'm fairly certain this was built on the site of a mosque after the Christians re-conquered Andalucia. It's stunning, both inside & out. We climbed up the tower and saw a great view of the city.

And, the cathedral had the remains of what is believed to be Christopher Columbus. And, I saw a recent Discovery Channel (or was it History Channel?!) show that DNA tested the remains against his brother's bones & the remains in the cathedral were related to Diego Columbus!

Alcazar
It seemed to me that each main city had it's own Alcazar. It was part palace, part fort. And, in Andalucia, these palace-forts had strong Islamic-influences. I've never been in such beautiful buildings before. I've been inside lux Danish castles with gold everywhere and the detailed carving and thoughtful architecture of the Alcazar & the Alhambra (wait for another blog post!) were far more breath-taking. Seriously. You walk through and can't help but imagine a more romantic time.

Italica

Just outside of Seville are ruins of the Roman city of Italica. It's amazing. And, for an entry of 1.80E (so, about $3), it was a total bargain. Bonus points was that it was practically empty...so it was like we had the whole city to ourselves.

Things are growing well in the garden & I'm happy to finally be able to grow something. And even happier that, after 2 months, they are still alive! :)

First, the flowers:

Out of focused, but pretty cool, I think.

Dahlias. As you could probably tell by the header on the blog, I am in love with dahlias. They were in my wedding bouquet and they are just so strong, yet feminine, and graphic.

Another dahlia. In real life, these are a pinky orange. My favorite!

I went to Boston for work & got in a few hours early so that I could walk around a bit. I liked Boston...it reminded me a bit of DC, although I wasn't in the skyscraper area. I liked, though, that the city was so walkable, but I thought their subway system was weird (especially that parts didn't seem to be handicap-accessible). I also thought it was weird you couldn't see how much you had left on your CharlieTicket. Newbury Street was fun. Sorta reminded me of the K St-corridor, or Dupont. There was a fantastic tea place there. I got some *awesome* loose leaf tea...Boston & tea- go figure! :) And Beacon Hill was very Georgetown-esque.

Admittedly, I'm not very good at the macro photography. I tend to not have my focus in the appropriate places & I have little patience for a light breeze (totally reeks havoc with the necessary slow shutter speeds). But I'm trying. Here are some forest shots from Red Rock Regional Park from Memorial Day. I love how this area has all these great hiking areas.

Evidence of my funky focus habits. I should have been focusing on the spider. Instead, the side of the web is in focus.

And, some motion issues. The ladybug is a little fuzzy.

Now some shots I'm proud of. I love the sharp focus going on with the leaf & twig and that the background was appropriately blurred out. And the flower? I love the lighting. It's like the flower is hiding something. And these two photos had very little photoshop'ing. The leaf one had a bit of color popping & the flower I think I left as-is!

It started with a {plane trip} to Chicago for work. My flight got delayed leaving Chicago, so I really had the *entire* Chicago experience! (I also had deep dish pizza while sitting next to 2 Chicago Bulls players!)

Next? Well, to spend a little quality time with the husband we decided, along with the rest of the DC metro area, to check out the {Cherry Blossom Festival}. I used a new technique- Through the Viewfinder (TTV) where you build a contraption & take a picture with your macro lens thru the viewfinder of an old camera. In my case, a Kodak Duaflex. Hence the scratched, slightly dirty, square images. Tres retro, no?

And then, what did I do? I bought a {house}. Well, my husband and I bought a house. Needless to say, that took up much of my time, what with the searching, fretting, packing, cleaning, shopping for curtains/rugs, and ultimately unpacking.

Hmmm...what came next? Oh, yes! Another work trip! This time to {San Francisco} & I was able to combine it with visiting my friend {Sarah}. She really is the hostess with the mostest! Thanks Sarah! I had some seriously fabulous {wine}. Do you Fume? Or para-surf?

Then just 5 short days after arriving back from San Francisco I went to Pittsburgh for the weekend. And forgot my camera at home!

So, as you can see, I've been a mite-bit busy. Forgive me for the long time a-comin' updates. Tomorrow I'll try to update from the photos I took this weekend.

And got back on!

I forgot to take a picture a day a few times & then I was "too tired" to take then & then it was official: I had broken my resolution.

But now I'm back! Sort of. I don't want to do the picture a day gig if it makes me dread taking pictures. So, I'm amending the resolution: I do my best to take the pictures, but if I truly don't feel like it, I don't have to.

I headed down to the National Mall today. The weather was nice, so what I felt like I ought to be outside. I'm glad I went. While I was unable to a decent photo of my favorite "monument", the DC WWI Memorial, I got some other good shots that made up for it.

I'm finding I rather like landscape photography. Perhaps it's because of all those period-dramas set in the English countryside I watch?!? Which, by the way, I'm lusting after a vacation to the UK. Anyone want to pay me to go & take photos? ;)

Last Monday thru Thursday I was in Las Vegas for work. Getting there was...hellacious. We were an hour late leaving, encountered strong headwinds, almost ran out of fuel (so we had to stop in Denver), and experienced 1.5 hours of non-stop & extreme turbulence. The whole trip was 8 hours sitting in the plane seat and was the worst flight of my life.

But, I survived [barely]! Vegas itself wasn't too bad. I'd like to go back when it's slightly warmer to go hiking & try some of the restaurants.

Sunday, Jan. 27th: Batida de frambuesas- milk & raspberries blended with ice. I got these all the time when I was in Costa Rica. !que rico!

Monday: Finally on land! Red Rock Canyon (I call the second picture "Land Before Time")

Tuesday: The Palms. Literally.

Wednesday: Viewing the Casinos

Thursday: I actually forgot to take a picture (forgive me, I was travelling home), but here's another shot from Wed.

So, I'm finding keeping up with blogging & Project 365'ing is difficult. And I have to let one slip,

Ole! Hans & I freaking puffy heart tacos. Not taco-seasoning-and-crispy-shell-with-iceberg-tacos, but proper, based-in-authencity tacos. Tonight was a charred peppers and a "mojo" marinated chicken (fresh orange juice, cumin, chili powder, garlic, and ground pasilla peppers) variety with roasted corn (frozen from Trader Joe's & doctored up with fresh tomatoes & cilantro), jicama (with lime!), and sweet plantains. The plantains, as always, are the most delicioso part! :)

So, I was in 'Lauderdale on business. I was workin' like 12 hour days when you put in the schmoozing I was supposed to be doing in the evening. BUT, I was able to squeeze in a few workouts AND photo frames! I grew up in FL and sometimes forget it really is a beautiful state. The sunsets are especially breathtaking. My room was on the 12th floor and I got some spectacular views of what I can only assume is downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Below you've got a nice smattering of what it looks like at night, at night actin' crazy, and during a cloudy/rainy sky with what *may* be a Ron Paul 4 Prez. balloon. Just sayin'

I am now the proud owner of a Canon 40d. I was going to wait a few months, but I had the money all saved up & Hans was really encouraging me to go for it. What can I say: I'm a sucker for peer pressure! It was actually quite difficult to find the one with the kit lens I wanted (28-135mm). The night after I got it, we went out to do some night photography...something that would have been impossible on my other camera!

I got so wrapped up (literally) in the holidays & such that I haven't gotten around to posting any new pictures. But, rest assured, I HAVE BEEN TAKING THEM! Here's a sample from over the past weeks:

That's right: a gummy bear army.

Back story: I was out getting stocking stuffers (candy...shhhhh don't tell Hans!) during my lunch break and bought some gummy bears for me to keep at my desk. Well, I forgot to take them out of the bag when I got back to the office. On the ride home from work I started thinking about how light might look going through them. They are, afterall, gummy jewels of sugary goodness!

So, feeling inspired, I got home, grabbed a flashlight, my camera, and white paper to put them on. Of course, I ate the poor buggers that wouldn't stand up properly. Gimps. All & all it was an experience in night photography & noise reduction software (my camera is woefully noisy)! It also hightlighted my need for a true macro lense. **sigh** Someday...

Anyhow, some of these turned out super cool, although it appears a bit like they are heading to the Mother Ship.

Hans got his new bike frame yesterday. A shiny, new, red bike. He named it Radio Flyer and rode it this morning, so it's already dirty. :( Good thing I took a picture of it!

The other one is from this morning. I snapped it just before leaving for work; the sun was rising and only the very tippy-top of the trees have leaves. The red color is partly due to the red leaves but also the sunrise. It was totally worth being 5 min late to work!

I freaking puffy heart a good depth of field! And how do you get that, class? That's right, say it with me: A-PER-TURE! HOLLA! So, this weekend Hans & I headed over to T.R. Island and tried to capture what late fall looks like here. It's a pretty ugly time of year. The trees are half barren and there's lots of brown around. This is what I came up with:

Notice that it's basically the same picture, just different focal points (one has the focus on the foreground & one has the background).

I love the pattern & texture on the tree. I was trying to focus on pattern this weekend. It can be so hard photographing places and things that are familiar to you. Hans & my teacher suggested that when we have "photographer's"-block, we focus instead on shadow, lines, etc. to help us see our world in a new light.

I don't know what these berries are, but I love this grouping of three.

I wish all of these pictures were crisper...my shutter speed was a bit too slow and I was shivering! :)

Santa, can I have a tripod PLEASE?!? I've been good! Promise! ;)

Aperture is a "hole" inside the lens. When you change the aperture, you're either making the hole larger or smaller. Smaller aperture numbers (like f/1.8) let in more light than larger numbers (like f/8). In my mind, there are two main reasons to adjust your aperture: exposure and depth of field. Adjusting aperture to do a correct exposure is sorta the "boring" use of it. In a low light situation, you may have little choice about having a large/wide open/small number aperture if you don't have a tripod (the shutter speed would be too slow for holding the camera still). Similarly, on very bright days you may have little choice too.

Using exposure to vary the depth of field is more "artsy" and interesting way to use aperture. You can isolate a subject in the foreground (or background for that matter) and 'washout' the backround (or foreground). Look at these:

See how the subjects (or one of them) are sharp and the rest isn't quite as sharp? Thank you aperture!

Also, next time you're watching a movie or TV show, notice how the person talking is sharp and often the background or the person they are talking to isn't....This can give you a lot of ideas on how to use aperture!

Ok, so I'm a few days late.

Anywho...

Bryan Peterson had a great analogy. ISO is like a worker bee. So, if your ISO is 100, then you have 100 worker bees. And, if you move your ISO up to 200, you then have 200 worker bees. Thus, for a given aperture (shutter speed), the higher the ISO the faster your shutter speed (smaller aperature). Put another way, higher ISO is more sensitive which is why you often need higher ISO for low light situations and lower ISO for bright, daylight situations.

Good to know, right?!

The exercise was changing the ISO, keeping the aperature constant & seeing what happened to the shutter speed. Here are the results (my model for the exercise is my ficus bonsai, Newton The Fig Tree):

ISO ___, aperature, shutter speed

ISO 100, f/3.2, 1/2

ISO 200, f/3.2, 1/4

ISO 400, f/3.2, 1/8

ISO 800, f/3.2, 1/15

ISO 1600, f/3.2, 1/30

Notice that the pictures are exposed almost exactly the same. Also notice that the higher the ISO (especially on the ISO 1600), the nosier the picture. The noise is more apparent (to me) in the shadowy areas...the black isn't really black...sorta splotchy.

So, now I get ISO!

Well, I didn't trash *my* dress...I trashed another Katie's! Trash the dress photo shoots are a new trend in wedding photography. It's a post wedding way to wear your dress and get some interesting pictures in it. There's often a fair bit of controversy around it...messing up a perfectly good, expensive piece of clothing is seen, by some, as frivolous. However, TTD sessions don't have to destroy the dress. Like the one I did today; the dress wasn't anymore ruined than mine at the garden ceremony.

It was totally fun. I learned a lot too. I used Hans dSLR and having a proper camera really did make all the difference, especially for the action shots. The downside was, though, I wasn't used to his camera, so I couldn't properly expose the pictures AND get the shot. At this point, I'll take the shot & try to expose it properly next time. :) Using the 'burst' button was also a lifesaver for the action shots. And, the biggest lesson I learned today: waking up at 6:30am and braving the cold is *totally* worth it. Old Town Alexandria was deserted and the lighting was so warm and flattering.

Hurray! My husband is back from Germany and has brought me like a kilo of chocolate. Good man.

Jealous? (about the husband, not the chocolate, of course!)

The point of this post is that I believe that even the everyday and the mundane deserve to be photographed. In fact, I think it's more of a challenge to take an interesting picture of chocolate bars & your darling husband ignoring you than it is, say, to take an interesting picture of a sunset or a exotic location. By nature, those kind of out of the ordinary pictures appeal to our eyes...but something you see everyday? Not quite as much. Hence the challenge!

Besides the above, how about:

I've decided I'm going to work through Understanding Exposure (by Bryan Peterson). This weekend I'm going to tackle understanding ISO & exposure exercises. And I've got 2 photo shoots.

Howdy strangers!

In the future I'll post my adventures in focal lengths, shutter speeds, and lighting. But for now, I'll post about my hair...all 12 inches that got chopped off.

That hair met my husband, it went to Mexico and Thailand, it started 2 new jobs, and looked all purdy on my wedding day. *tear* It will truly be missed!

Now it'll be shipped off to Wigs For Kids to make a hairpiece for a kid with cancer. And I get a fresh new look. Sweet deal all the way around, right?!

But, if you tell me I look like Janeane Garofalo, I'll slap you upside the head. In the sweetest, most polite way, of course!
